Richmond For All condemns the murder of eight people, including six Asian women, in Atlanta last night. We strongly denounce the anti-Asian racism, misogyny, and discrimination against sex workers that led to this tragedy. We mourn with and are in solidarity with Asian communities and our sex worker siblings.

Unfortunately, these attacks are not an isolated incident. Rather, they are the logical conclusion of President Trump’s racist descriptions of the Covid-19 crisis, and the fueling of white nationalism. They are the conclusion of an unbroken thread of xenophobic forms of patriotism, exploitation of immigrant labor, and violence against women that…

The People’s Delegate

Today, we are excited to announce our endorsement of Richard Walker for House of Delegates in the 71st district.

Corporate control has dominated governance in Virginia for too long. Corporations like Dominion Energy and Amazon exert enormous influence on many lawmakers at the General Assembly through campaign contributions and nearly unlimited resources for lobbyists and litigation. Even under Democratic control of the General Assembly and Governor’s office, reforms and initiatives that have broad, majority support are defeated or watered-down. We are in the midst of an environmental, economic and public health crisis, and we need leaders who will take on…

We are absolutely thrilled to announce our endorsement of Sam Rasoul for Lt. Governor. As we saw this session, the Senate of Virginia is closely divided, with conservative Democrats often siding with Republicans on major legislation — like housing protections, marijuana legalizations, and environmental protections. It is critical that we have a progressive Lieutenant Governor to deliver real change in the Senate.

Sam Rasoul has been an environmental justice leader, being one of the few elected leaders to support the movement against the construction of harmful pipelines in rural Virginia. …

Virginians need a champion who will deliver results for working families and take on the fight to build a democratic government that is truly of and for the people. We need Jennifer Carroll Foy as our next Governor.

For far too long, Virginia’s government has been dominated by the influence of wealthy corporations and individuals. Democrats have won both houses and the Governor’s mansion, yet we still see rampant, completely legal corruption in the form of unlimited campaign donations. Right now, Virginia has a real opportunity to turn the page and elect a Governor who will fight for all Virginians.

Educators and families do a light brigade in advance of the January 2019 teacher walkout.

For the past decade we have seen an increase in attendance of Virginia’s public schools, yet a decline in funding. Virginia’s state legislature used the Great Recession of 2009 to justify devastating cuts, yet when the economy recovered those same leaders did not take responsibility to restore funding levels. As a result, Virginia — one of the wealthiest states in the country — has one of the lowest rates of per pupil funding and teacher pay. In fact, our funding…

“One of the great problems of history is that the concepts of love and power have usually been contrasted as opposites — polar opposites — so that love is identified with a resignation of power, and power with a denial of love… Now, we’ve got to get this thing right. What is needed is a realization that power without love is reckless and abusive, and love without power is sentimental and anemic.”

Demands of the Grassroots

updated: March 18th, 2020.

Today Richmond For All joined a community of grassroots organizations in co-signing lists of demands from the Legal Aid Justice Center and Transformative Spaces detailing needs for local and federal government in support of community care during a pandemic of this character. As COVID-19 effects ripple out, Richmond has desperate need for the following:

A secure housing plan that freezes all evictions and provides supportive housing and sanitation care for individuals facing housing insecurity. There is urgent need to suspend all plans to take adverse action against the residents of Cathy’s Camp, where negligence on the…

On Monday five members of Richmond City Council took an essential step toward honoring democratic process and public governance by recommending council strike the ordinances tied to Dominion Energy’s coliseum redevelopment project.

This recommendation comes after over 14 months of negotiation, debate, and public meetings. There have been two public mobilizations to council in opposition to the deal, on December 17th of 2018 and again November 12th of 2019. There have been six public meetings of the Navy Hill Advisory Commission, each of which was followed by well attended public comment sessions. …
